Câmara Municipal do Funchal, Praça do MunicipioFunchal is the capital and largest city of Madeira. It has a population of some 104,000, although the city itself along with the surrounding urbanised area is home to some 130,000 inhabitants. Founded in 1421 by João Gonçalves Zarco, the Portuguese navigator and explorer. It was chosen for settlement because of the natural sheltered harbour. It's name is said to derive from the abundance of fennel plants ("funcho" in Portuguese) that Zarco found when he first arrived in 1420. The Câmara Municipal, or town hall, is the administrative centre of the city at the Praça do Municipio, or the Minicipal Square. Funchal harbour and the surrounding hillsThe city is surrounded by mountains that form a natural amphitheatre. From the harbour, the mixture of traditional and modern buildings form a maze of streets that rise to the upper limits of the city some 1,200 metres above sea level. In 2004, the Madeira Balloon ride opened. This was an attraction that took the tourist over 100 metres above the harbour in a secure viewing platform and offered fantastic panoramic views. Unfortunately, the venture was not economically viable and has now closed. So, now, one of the best ways to fully explore the capital of Madeira is on foot. Fortaleza de São TiagoThe city is divided into three by two rivers. In the eastern sector is the original Old Town, or Zona Velha. Here, the Fortaleza de São Tiago stands. Built in 1614, it is named after São Tiago o Menor, patron saint of Funchal. Alongside, is the small, pebble beach of Praia da Barreirinha which is traditionally popular with the locals. However, the tourist will find the local restaurants more appealing and typical Madeiran menus are the order of the day. In this district is also the Jardim do Almirante Reis where the terminal for the Teleféricos da Madeiras, the Monte Cable Car, is situated. Praça da AutonomiaThe central sector of the city is the commercial heart of Madeira. Here there is a shopping centre complex with cinema and an assortment other shops, all geared for local custom. On the seafront, at the end of the Avenida do Mar e Comunidades is a modern statue of a office worker. Across the road is the Praça da Autonomia, a public square marking Madeira gaining autonomy. However, this square is stark and rundown and doesn't offer anything noteworthy. From here you can start along the seafront promenade to the harbour. Our Promenade Pictures Guide has different pictures of this walk. Also by the Praça da Autonomia is the information booth for the Horarios do Funchal, the yellow town buses.

Sé CathedralThe western sector of Funchal is where most of the historical and cultural buildings are located. Here, the Sé Cathedral stands. Building started in 1485 and was completed by 1514. Inside, there is a striking ceiling of juniper wood with ivory inlay. This Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings on Madeira and well worth a visit. Also in this area is the Palácio de S. Lourençe and the Palácio do Governo Regional. Of particular interest to the tourist will be the Madeira Wine Museum that is situated not far from the Jardim Municipal, the Municipal Gardens. Further pictures of Sé Cathedral and it's surrounds can be viewed in our Municipal Square Pictures Guide
