The coastline eastward along from Porto da Cruz

Porto da Cruz was once an important port on Madeira's northeast coastline. However, with the introduction of motor transport for transporting goods around the island, the harbour fell into decline. Recently, much building work has been undertaken to improve Porto da Cruz and its immediate surrounds. The sea front has been modernised and there is now a promenade walk around the headland. A new cafe and changing facilities have also been added to the seafront. There are a couple of hotels in the area, and those seeking a tranquil holiday may be tempted by the solitude of the area. As can be seen from the photo, the pebble beach to the east of the town is often deserted.
