Eagle Rock towering over the coastal town of Porta da Cruz

Eagle Rock, known to the locals as Penha de Águia, lies on the northeastern coastline of Madeira. It towers 590 metres over the adjacent town of Porto da Cruz and the small villages scattered inland. To the west lies the coast towards Faial. It is said that the rock was named by the original explorers of the island. When they first approached this part of the island from the sea, there was an abundance of eagles gliding above and around the sheer rock face. In this area of the island there are many scenic walks that were originally trading paths, used by the locals to transport goods on foot. Today, many guided walk companies use the same paths to provide tours giving spectacular views and the opportunity to sample some of the natural diversity of Madeira.
