The Forte São Tiago on the seafront of Funchal Old Town, Santa Maria
Start ¦ Prev ¦ Main ¦ Next ¦ End
Situated on the seafront along Funchal Old Town (also known as the Santa Maria district by the locals) is the Forte São Tiago. In English this translates as the Fort St. James. This is the yellow building shown in the photo. The fort was built in 1614, and it is named after São Tiago o Menor, the patron saint of Funchal. It was one of two strongholds that protected Funchal from the pirates that often came ashore to plunder. Today, the Fort houses a Contemporary Art Museum. There is also a Military Room which details the historical significance and strategic importance of the Fortaleza. It is well worth a visit. You are free to wander amid the maze of passages, staircases and towers. Stand in its turrets and look out to sea and imagine a hostile ship approaching the city! The fortress also houses one of the best restaurants in the capital.
