Ponta de São Lourenço is situated on the Eastern peninsula of Madeira. From this vantage point there are spectacular views of the coastline. You can also see the island of Porto Santo. As you can see from the photo, the terrain is stark and rugged.
There is a hiking trail, the start of which is less demanding and suitable for most fit people. The final 1.5km of the trail sometimes runs close to the cliff edge so you will need a head for heights. There is no cafe, so you are advised to bring your own picnic and provisions. To reach the start of the trail, drive eastward along the EN101-3 past Caniçal. The road merges into the ER109. Drive along the ER109 eastward past Prainha Beach. At the small roundabout, the left turn leads to a miradouro, a viewing point with breathtaking views. For the hiking trail, take the right turn and continue to the end. Here, there is a small car park with Baia, d'Abra (Abra Bay) on your right. The trail heads eastward along the southern coastline of the peninsula. To get to the eastern most tip, the Ponta de São Lourenço, is a round journey of about 7km and you should allow 3 hours or more.
