Coastline with waves and town

Start ¦ ¦ Main ¦ ¦ End

The natural rock pools of Porto do Moniz are not the only reason to visit the village. There is an indoor, heated swimming pool for those times when the sea is just too inclement. But, if swimming is not your choice, you don't have travel far inland from the coast to reach the Laurissilva Forest World Heritage site.

Porto do Moniz also hosts the Aquarium of Madeira. The Aquarium building is a replica of the fort of San Juan Bautista that once occupied the spot, protecting the local inhabitants from pirate attacks. The Aquarium itself features a diverse collection of regional sea life.

The Living Science Center is also located in the village. Here, along with the permanent interactive exhibits and in-house Planetarium, occasional “specials” are presented. The latest technological innovations in video and projection are used to provide a journey of knowledge that will be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. One such “special” was a voyage of the stars, planets, constellations and the fascinating story of how life began on earth.
