The Avenida M Arriaga is one of the main thoroughfares in Funchal. The ornamental trees in the photo are Jacarandas (Jacaranda mimosifolia) and they are in flower from April through to June. They reach some 15 metres in height and bear small, woody fruit that ripens to a dark brown hue. Here they form a shaded walkway down the middle of the street. Of special interest to the tourist, on the Avenida M Arriaga is where Blandy's Wine Lodge is situated. Tours of the Wine Lodge are available, but it is advisable to book in advance. Each tour takes approximately 40 minutes and introduces the visitors to the history and uniqueness of Madeira Wine. Of course, there is the opportunity for a spot of Madeira Wine tasting.
