The junction of Avenida Zarco with Avenida M Arriaga, Funchal city centre, May 2006

The Avenida Zarco is another tree-line street in Funchal that leads inland and uphill from the seafront. It is named after the Portuguese navigator, João Gonçalves Zarco, who rediscovered the Madeira islands in 1419. Appropriately, at the crossroad junction with Avenida M Arriaga, there stands a statue of João Gonçalves Zarco. The city's main post office is also located here and, further down, is the historic Palácio de São Lourenco which served as the official residence for the island's governors.
