The Banco de Portugal in Funchal occupies this majestic building at 8, Avenida Arriaga. It is situated just behind the statue of João Gonçalves Zarco which stands at the crossroad with the Avenida Zarco. João Gonçalves Zarco, the Portuguese navigator and explorer, first arrived in Madeira in 1920 and founded Funchal in 1921. The Banco de Portugal building was designed by architect Edmundo Tavares and officially opened in 1940. Amongst others, Edmundo Tavares also designed Funchal's Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers market) building.
