Madeira, being a volcanic island, has a rugged terrain and very little coastal plain. Transport around the island was, in the past, difficult. Today, the Cota 200 expressway has revolutionised transport on the island. Many bridges and extensive tunnelling has enabled fast transport links. Funchal is now only approximately 30 minutes from the airport via the motorway. Basically, the motorway runs along the southern coast, up through the middle valley of Madeira and along part of the northern coast. With the aid of EU grants, further expansion of the network is planned.
