The Cota 200 expressway, runs through the northern suburbs of Funchal. The motorway has numerous bridges and tunnels that allows the road to run in the most direct route. Traditionally, the roads would hug the mountain sides and snake torturously from one community to the next. With the aid of EU grants, the new motorway network means that transport times throughout Madeira have been dramatically reduced. Today, travelling between the airport and Funchal harbour takes approximately 40 minutes.
