Funchal has a natural harbour and even the largest sea going luxury cruise liner can berth with little problem. The port also used to be the centre for commercial cargo imports and exports, but today this function is served by a new, purpose built port further along the coast to the east. There is no beach to speak of, just a narrow stretch of dark grey pebbles. The extent of the city can be truly appreciated when viewed from the vantage point of Monte and the cable cars at Babosas.
