The city of Funchal boasts a natural deep water harbour. It was this, and the position of Madeira in general, that gave the island its historical importance. Situated some 800km from Lisbon, Madeira lies on the main shipping route from Europe to South America and South Africa, hence Funchal became a convenient port of call. In the 19th century, affluent travellers, especially from Britain, started to head towards the island for pleasure in ever growing numbers. And, until Funchal international airport was opened in 1964, the main mode of arrival was via the sea.
