Funchal harbour used to be the commercial centre for Madeira's sea-going trade. Today, there are ambitious redevelopment plans for the area. A new marina and port is proposed that will cater for the individual seafaring tourist along with luxury cruise liner passengers. At present (March 2009) the proposed cost of the redevelopment is estimated to be €15Million with a completion date of sometime during 2010. It is proposed that the modernisation will include parking for over 400 cars.
