Preparing Tuna fish for sale in Funchal market, Mercado dos Lavradores

Next to the fresh fruit and veg market in Funchal is the fish market hall. Here tuna and the local speciality, espada, is prepared and sold. The market building itself was designed in the 1930’s by the architect Edmundo Tavares. Officially opened on 24th of November 1940, the Mercado dos Lavradores was originally intended to be run by a local farmers' cooperative.
