Funchal Marina and Santa Catarina Park

Start ¦ ¦ Main ¦ ¦ End

Santa Catarina Park gives the tourist some splendid views of the bay of Funchal. On the seaward side of the park is a pathway that leads down from a cafe and small children's play area. Follow it down towards the Rotunda Sá Cameiro and you will enjoy splendid panoramic views of Funchal Marina and beyond. Part way down there is a viewing platform that is an ideal vantage point to take photographs. The photo above shows this path and gives just a hint of the view.

At the bottom of Santa Catarina Park stands the Chapel of Santa Catarina, built in the early years of the 15th century. It is rarely open to visitors but, nevertheless, it offers a point of interest to holidaymakers. If you take the time to stop here, gaze inland up the slopes of the City, see if you can pick out the white facade of Monte Church about two thirds of the way up the mountainside. Alternatively, look around the slopes of the park and pick out the different species of tropical and sub-tropical flora that has been collected here. Also situated in the park, there are statues of Henry the Navigator and Christopher Columbus.
