Funchal Photo Gallery

Santa Catarina park is situated on the western outskirts of Funchal City. It stretches from the Rotunda do Infante up a slight incline to the Presidential Palace. From 1946 onwards, Santa Catarina park has been continually developed and improved. In 1966, its upkeep was assumed by the Municipality of Funchal.

At one time, there were cages containing different species of birds lining the walkway up to the Presidential Palace. Over the years, these fell into disrepair and today, thankfully, are no longer used to confine any birds. Instead, towards the top of the park is a large pond that features a fountain and provides a natural home to wildfowl. Our photo above gives one view of the pond and from it you can appreciate that it is a spot that offers tranquility. Here, there is also a small cafe offering refreshments. What better way to spend a sunny afternoon than to sit by the pond and let the time slip away as you enjoy a cooling drink. . .

The park is also a popular location for wedding day couples to visit and have photographs taken against the backdrop of a variety of tropical flowers and trees. Often, usually on a Saturday, a procession of cars, continuously hooting their horns, will announce the arrival of newlyweds. The bride and groom will then wander amongst the flora and pose for photos whilst happy relatives and friends look on.
