Traditional house at Santana
Start ¦ Prev ¦ Main ¦ Next ¦ End
The district of Santana is renown for its tradional houses known locally as palheiros. These buildings were originally used by the farmers of the area as cow byres, but the design was adapted for human habitation also. They are wooden framed and government grants mean that some locals continue to live in these traditional homes. The main income of the area is agriculture, but today, tourism also provides a welcome bonus.
