Levada path at Ribeiro Frio. The levada network dates from 1452
Start ¦ Prev ¦ Main ¦ Next ¦ End
The Levada flowing from Ribeiro Frio is typical of the irrigation channels that were first built in the 15th century. Alongside the water channel, originally intended for maintenance workmen, but today extensively used by tourist hikers, is a narrow pathway. Ribeiro Frio translated means icy river, and, I can verify that it earns its name well. On some stretches of this levada walk, you will need a good head for heights and sure feet. If you take a packed lunch, choose one of the makeshift picnic spots. When you unpack your sandwiches, there is a possibility that you will be joined by wild finches that have learnt to fly down and wait for crumbs.
