Levada walk by the side of the water channel
Start ¦ Prev ¦ Main ¦ Next ¦ End
Some levada walks in Madeira can be enjoyed even by those tourists who don't have a head for heights. The water flow is invariably gentle as the irrigation channels usually have a very gentle slope and that means that hikers can enjoy an undemanding forest walk. Today's levada system is a result of a government study that was began in 1939 and designed to bring the ancient waterways up to date.
