Start of traditional Toboggan run, Monte January 1999
Start ¦ Prev ¦ Main ¦ Next ¦ End
The Monte toboggan ride dates from 1850. Originally, it was introduced as a fast means of transport into Funchal city centre for the inhabitants of Monte. However, today, the ride exists solely for tourist customers. The toboggan is steered by two men (carreiros de Monte) running alongside the wicker toboggan which glides on two wooden runners. The drivers are traditionally dressed in a uniform of white shirt and trousers, and a white straw hat. The price for a ride is costly by Madeira's standards and the drivers seem to always expect a tip in addition.
