Funchal old gate
Start ¦ Prev ¦ Main ¦ Next ¦ End
The original Old Wall Gate, that formed part of Funchal's military defences, was built in 1689. The structure was demolished in 1911 as part of the city's redevelopment. The photo shows a faithful reconstruction of Varadouros Old Gate that now stands in the original's place. It was built in September 2004 to mark part of the 500 year anniversary of Madeira's capital city. The crown, royal arms and inscribed stone that adorn the reconstruction are pieces saved from the original Old Wall Gate and were previously housed in the Quinta das Cruzes Museum.
