Crowded streets watching the flower festival windmill float, Funchal May 2003
Start ¦ Prev ¦ Main ¦ Next ¦ End
Each float in Funchal's Flower Festival procession possesses its own significance. In the photo you can see the flower windmill float making its way through the crowded streets of Funchal. The windmill is a symbol of Porto Santo. Porto Santo is Madeira's neighbouring island, some 37 kilometers away. Being almost totally flat, the island benefits from constant wind, hence the importance of windmills in its history.
