Funchal Airport, also known as Santa Catarina Airport, has the international airport code of FNC. Although the airport officially opened in July 1964, its history goes further back. From the mid 1950s, an airfield has existed on the site. For its official opening, a runway of 1,600 metres was constructed and the airport was further expanded until in 1973 it had a 500,000 passengers a year capacity. To allow for the larger, modern jets, the runway was again extended to 2,800 metres and, today, some 2 million passengers a year pass through its terminal.
