Steep walk up to the levada dos Piornais from the tourist district of Funchal

Most people who stay in a hotel in the Lido district of Funchal do not venture up behind the line of hotels along the Estrada Monumental. However, there is a steep pathway that leads up to join the Levada dos Poirnais. Look for the Raga Hotel, the pathway starts just behind it, from the Rua Velha da Ajuda. Climbing steeply, you join the levada and, if you follow its course westward, you can enjoy views of the tourist district and the residential area beyond.
