Madeira island is some 54km long and 23km wide. As can be seen from this satellite photograph, the terrain is mountainous and rugged. This is due to its volcanic origins which date back 20 million years. Pico Ruivo, lying just to the right of the centre of the island, is 1,862 metres above sea level. Lying just to the left of the centre of the island, you can clearly see the Paúl da Serra plateau that is approximately 20sq/km in area and lies in the region of 1,500 to 1,600 metres above sea level.
