The old Monte Palace Hotel stands on the grounds of the original Quinta do Prazer which dates back to the 1700s and was owned by the English Consul Charles Murray. In 1897, Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues purchased the Quinta do Prazer and built a residence on the land which was converted into the Monte Palace Hotel in 1904. In 1943, Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues passed away and the hotel was closed down and sold to Caixa Económia do Funchal. In 1987, José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo bought the old Monte Palace Hotel and its surrounding grounds and the estate was transformed into the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens which was opened to the public in 1989.
