If you hire a car in Madeira, you will undoubtedly pass through many a tunnel. This photo shows a typical entrance to an older tunnel. Because Madeira is an island formed by volcanic eruptions more than 20 million years ago, the coastal plain is narrow and any road-building that took place away from the coast necessitated the construction of many tunnels and bridges.
