Video Introduction to Madeira 1 - Complete with Facts & Figures
This video introduction to Madeira (9 minutes 3 seconds) gives you some basic facts and figures. A short look around the capital city, Funchal, gives you a flavour of the variety on offer to visitors. Especially during the Christmas festivities, the locals go to the trouble of remembering a bygone era and endeavour not to allow the pace of modern living encroach upon their traditions. This link gives Photos of Funchal at Christmas.
One of the oldest surviving buildings in Funchal is the Cathedral Se, completed in 1514. It was commissioned by Portugal's King Manuel I and took 29 years to build. It served a population that then stood at approximately 5,000 (excluding slaves). Today, the population of Madeira is nearer 300,000 and is said to be 90% Roman Catholic. In general, religious traditions are important to the locals and this video spends some time reflecting upon the nature of the Thanks Giving Mass.
Finally, we look at the lighter side of Christmas, literally; the Christmas light decorations in the heart of the capital. If you are looking for a Xmas destination to escape the commercialism of the festive season, then look no further than Madeira. This link gives A slideshow of Funchal at Christmas. The Christmas lights decorations are lovely, but are only one aspect of the celebrations. Free street entertainment is popular. You will surely be delighted by anything from a choir of schoolchildren to a professional Jazz concert. But, that is for another video, for the time being, just enjoy the lights.
